We shouldn’t forget who said what, even if it’s just another Obama-worshiping Hollywood celeb

Tom Hanks has made a lot of blockbusters… $8.5 billion worth. He is his industry’s highest-grossing actor. He has had some great roles. Too bad he is not some of the characters he played so well.

We get a glimpse of who Hanks really is when he comes out from behind his mask and says asinine things. That can make his movies trying, which is nothing to him but still the case for some. It can be difficult to watch someone who readily says “he cares” about Veterans knowing he worships a president who clearly doesn’t.

Before we continue on that topic, let’s mention something that is related. In a 2013 TV interview in the UK, Hanks talked about ‘Captain Phillips’ and the Merchant Vessel (MV) Maersk Alabama, the U.S.-flagged container ship that was hijacked in 2009 by pirates armed with AK-47s off the coast of Somalia, the subject of which inspired a less-than-accurate film of the same name.

We don’t often see highly skilled and licensed professionals who take an Oath, who are charged with unique and critical roles in a time of war, get thrown under the bus, but that is what happened.

At the 2:39 mark in the interview, Tom Hanks stated rather matter-of-factly: “We would all probably have an idea that a ship like this is made up with a bunch of ragtag losers that are shiftless and running away from life itself…” <-Huh?

Hanks wasn’t done. Here’s another quote (from the same interview) that is, at the least, equally cringeworthy: At 4:59, Tom Hanks is asked his opinion of Obama. “I think he’s a fantastic leader and I think he’s leading fantastically.”

Then there is this, from 2012, by Don Anastas: ‘Tom Hanks Big Lie’ — a brief article detailing some of the lies Tom Hanks told in the Obama campaign film he narrated.

And if it couldn’t get any worse, Hanks, who already fundraised hard for Obama in ’08 and ’12, and made videos and appearances endorsing him, wanted a third term for the reelected Obama.

Tom Hanks is both a celebrity and a Hollywood heavyweight. He has affected American culture. Which is why, in times like this, when are country is seemingly being ripped apart, it only makes sense for us to remember the senseless, i.e., who said what and why. I’m not trying to tear down an icon. I’m just trying to set the record straight. Hanks not only disrespects merchant mariners, he’s CLUELESS. A copy of the U.S. Constitution on his night stand, with him reading it, wouldn’t hurt.

To end this on an upbeat note, Tom Hanks said something once that I didn’t actually hear till years later (being underway on something big and gray can do that). I thought I would share it…

At the 1992 Academy Awards ceremony, visual effects creator and pioneer Ray Harryhausen (1920-2013) received a special Oscar, with his lifetime friend Ray Bradbury (1920-2012) there to see it.

After thunderous applause and an ovation for Harryhausen, presenter Hanks turned to the audience and said, “Some say Citizen Kane is the greatest motion picture of all time. Others say it’s Casablanca. For me, the greatest picture of all time is Jason and the Argonauts.”

Twenty-two years ago yesterday, we decommissioned that ship I was on then. It was the last Adams Class guided missile destroyer in the fleet. I served on other tin cans, but that ship was my first and she was a beauty. The wonderful thing is, in Gun Plot, we watched Jason and the Argonauts on our final trip back to Pearl 🙂

    An accurate assessment of Obama:
“His narcissism is so cringe-worthy. It’s always about him … even when it’s constitutionally mandated that it can’t be.”
